With the recent inauguration of a new government in the country that saw the emergence of not only the first university graduate as president but also academicians occupying the two topmost positions in the land, the call for a rebirth in all other facets of the polity reverberate across the country.
As its contributions to development of a new Nigeria, Covenant University’s fourteenth Public Lecture will critically examine the current state of the nation, the Herculean task of birthing a new nation and the roles the Accounting profession, the Church and the Nigerian state have played in bringing about the sordid state of affairs in the country and what these three key institutions can do to bring about the much awaited Nigerian renaissance.
The lecture, titled, " Accounting Profession, the Church and the Nigerian State: Potent Change Agent for National Rebirth" will be delivered by an international accounting scholar, Professor Emmanuel Ndubuisi Emenyonu, on Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the University Chapel by 3 pm.
Professor Emenyonu is currently at Covenant University on sabbatical leave as a visiting professor.
Professor Emenyonu has had extensive teaching experience in Universities in Nigeria and abroad. He started his teaching career at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 1988 and was a teaching fellow at the University of Glasgow between 1990 and 1992. From January 1995 to September 1996, he was an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Howard University in Washington, D.C., an Assistant Professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, September 1996 to September 2000. He was appointed an Associate Professor in September of 2000 and a full Professor and Chair (Head of the Accounting Department) by President and Board of Trustees of the Southern Connecticut State University.
He has published numerous articles in leading academic journals in Europe, United States of America, Australia, India, Middle East and Nigeria. He has won numerous academic honors and awards.
The lecture will be chaired by Dr David Oyedepo, Chancellor of Covenant University.
CITATION ON PROFESSOR EMMANUEL N. EMENYONU
Professor Emmanuel Ndubuisi Emenyonu, graduated from the University of Nigeria in 1985 with a BSc degree in Accounting, Second Class Upper Division. Between 1985 and 1986 as part of his National Youth Service in the then Gongola State, he worked with the Upper Benue River Basin Authority as an Accountant. He subsequently obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Nigeria in 1987. He sat for the qualifying examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and qualified in May 1988. By September 1988 he started his teaching career as a Lecturer 11 with the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in the Accounting Department. By April 1989, he was awarded a British government Post-graduate Scholarship. In September 1989, he was enrolled in the Master of Accounting Degree programme at Glasgow University. He graduated in 1990 winning the David G. Lindsay prize as the best graduating student, and in the process met Glasgow University’s stringent conditions for admission to the doctoral programme in Accounting. In 1993 he was awarded the Doctoral degree with specialization in International Accounting. His doctoral thesis was titled: "International Accounting Harmonisation In Developed Stock Market Countries: An Empirical Study of Disclosure and Measurement Practices in France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States of America."

Professor Emenyonu has published numerous articles in leading academic journals in Europe, United States of America, Australia, India, Middle East and Nigeria. Some of the journals include: International Journal of Accounting, Journal of Accounting and Finance Research, International Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Perfomance Evaluation, Journal of African Business, Australian Accounting Review, Advances in International Accounting, the Journal of Industrial Business and Economic Research, Accounting and Business Research. He has also published in practitioner journals such as the Nigerian Accountant, the Financial Times of London, the First Bank Quarterly Review. He is the co-author of the book Bank Lending and Credit Administration.
Professor Emenyonu has made delivered papers at numerous international conferences such as the European Accounting Association, Madrid Spain, 1992; Academy of International Business, Boston, USA, 1994; International Association for Accounting Education and Research, Paris France, 1997; Academy of Economics and Finance, USA, 2003 to name a few. He has also served and continues to serve as a reviewer for major publishers such as John Wiley and Son and McGrawHill Publishers. From 2001 till now, he is the International Editor, Journal of Industrial, Business & Economic Research (JIBER).
He is affiliated with many academic and professional organizations such as the American Accounting Association , Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, International Association for Accounting Education and Research, Academy of Economics and Finance, Financial Executives International, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Outside the class room, Professor Emenyonu has held leadership positions with various organizations such as president of the African Christian Fellowship, New Haven Connecticut Chapter, President of the ACFUSA in the 14 states of the North Eastern United States including such cities as Washington, D.C., New York, Baltimore, Boston, Phildelphia, Pittsburg. The tenure of his leadership brought significant expansion and growth in the activities of the Fellowship. He is also a long standing member of the Council of the Missionary Crusaders Ministry, the Ministry that pioneered mission outreach to the Koma Hills People of Northern Nigeria. Since 1998 except for one year, he has been involved in missions outreaches to various countries in Africa.
