Covenant University has reinforced her commitment to driving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to Clean Water and Sustainable Environment by promoting ‘Operation Keep Campus Clean’ under the Covenant University Students Support Programme (CUSSP).
The Chairperson, CUSSP, Professor Mojisola Usikalu, said the body tailored the ‘Operation Keep Campus Clean’ scheme to make the students become change agents in the quest towards sustainable management and access to safe water, environmental sanitation. She said the SDG goals of Clean Water and Sustainable Environment were essential for unlocking economic growth and productivity and significant leverage for existing investments in health and education.
Professor Usikalu said the exercise, which got underway during the current academic session, rated the various students’ halls of residence. She stated that the CUSSP made specific observations in the halls, with the rating metrics based on the cleanliness of courtyards, standard rooms used by students, each floor of all wings in the galleries, reception area, buttery, and general environs.
She noted that the students’ population, in general, had demonstrated commitment to the ‘Operation Keep Campus Clean initiative’. She, however, indicated there was a need to reward and commend those students that had been remarkable in deeds as related to compliance to the general University rules and regulations, and maintenance of a clean hostel environment. “This will serve as an encouragement to them and others to keep up the sterling excellence, which is in line with the University’s drive of UN’s SDG 6 of clean water and sanitation”, she added.
At the end of the 2020/2021 academic session, Esther (female) and John (male) Halls were adjudged to be the neatest halls, with recognition conferred on the Residency Representation of the Students Consultative Assembly of both halls of residence.
The Registrar, Dr Oluwasegun Omidiora, said the University’s Management was committed to the ‘Operation Keep Campus Clean initiative’ to ensure a robust drive of Goal 6 of the United Nations SDGs, considering the current posture of the institution towards every SDG-related enterprise.
Dr Omidiora promised that the initiative would be an annual thing that will teach every student of the University the drive and zest to become an ambassador for United Nations SDG goal 6 of Clean Water and Sanitation.
‘Operation Keep Campus Clean’ is an initiative jointly birthed by the CUSSP and the Chaplaincy Unit of Covenant, with the theme ‘I rep cleanliness because I am godly’ under the auspices of the immediate past Chaplain of the University, Pastor Kayode Martins.
