The new leadership of Covenant University Students’ Council have been charged to see their emergence as a call to serve the interest of the entire student populace. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, gave the advice when he and other members of the University Management received the new executives on Monday, November 02, 2021.
Professor Adebayo told the student body executives that being deliberate in approach to leadership is vital to embracing the need to serve the greater cause of driving collective good for the University and the entire student body. “You are not the first, and you will not be the last to serve as council executives. However, your contribution is what is going to determine your impact in the course of your tenure,” he stated.
He advised the 33-man team to see their appointment as a privilege, not a right, noting that it is a call to higher service, and whatever leadership investment they have been making before must be multiplied for greater impact.
Professor Adebayo charged them to be inspired to do more to bring out the best in others. “You must do away with the urge to be self-centred in approach, and work tirelessly towards a collective result, at the same time be quick to give glory to God for every accomplishment during your tenure in office,” he advised.
He concluded by challenging them to use the platform to sharpen their leadership skill, with a mindset that the nation and continent are waiting for their competencies to help in remedying the black race. “Give your best in your new roles, build team spirit amongst you, and I assure you there is a reward for it,” he added.
In his response, the new Chair, University Students’ Council, Jesusegun Daniel Adejesu, of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, appreciated God for the privilege to serve his peers and pledged to ensure that the executives for the 2021/2022 academic session give the best representation available for the entire student populace.
He promised the University Management that the Council will work tirelessly to deliver on its mandate and ensure continuous peace and serenity on campus throughout the academic year.
Present at the presentation of the new student executives were the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Conrad Omohinmin, Director, Financial Services, Pastor Gbenga Kiki, Deputy Registrar, Mr Emmanuel Igban, and Head, Students Engagement, Activities, Leadership and Career Development Unit (SEALD), Ms Kemi Ayeni.
