ICAN Seeks Partnership with Covenant University, Introduces MCATI

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) recently sent a delegation, led by Professor Ishola Rufus Akintoye, to Covenant University, to discuss a Mutual Cooperation Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI); with the primary objective of enhancing the quality of Accountancy education at Covenant University.

In his welcome remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University expressed his appreciation for the partnership proposal, emphasizing the institution's commitment to producing graduates who are well-prepared for the industry. He sited the Town and Gown program of the University as one of the ways the institution prepares students for life after graduation. He highlighted the importance of industry experts engaging with students to provide practical insights. He pointed out that faculty members at Covenant include top industry professionals and fellows, who contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The Vice-Chancellor, also mentioned, that industry experts actively participate in student proposal and final defense sessions, ensuring that student work meets industry standards. He emphasized that Covenant University's dynamic approach to education has been successful and that the institution is constantly striving for improvement.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olajide Adekeye, commended Covenant University's collaborative efforts, stating that the institution has learned from the experiences of others to achieve its current status. He reiterated the university's commitment to continuous improvement and expressed confidence that the collaboration with ICAN would be fruitful.

During his remarks, the leader of the ICAN team, Professor Akintoye, explained that ICAN's visit was to assess the facilities and preparedness of Covenant University's Department of Accounting for the accreditation of ICAN's professional examination. He praised Covenant University's Accounting curriculum and classified the institution as one of the best in this regard. The ICAN team also presented journals to the University during the visit.

Remarking on the event, the Dean of the College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS), Professor Roland Worlu, highlighted ICAN's reputation for capacity building, which aligns with Covenant's core values. He encouraged ICAN to provide candid and comprehensive feedback to help Covenant University maintain its excellence.

In conclusion, Professor Adebayo thanked the ICAN team for their insightful analysis and pledged to strive for excellence before the next review.

The collaboration between Covenant University and ICAN promises to enhance the quality of Accountancy education at the university, benefiting both students and the accounting profession in Nigeria.
