CU Health Week 2024: Commemoration of World Health Day

Covenant University officially commenced the CU Health Week 2024 in commemoration of World Health Day, with the  theme, ‘My Health, My Responsibility’, on April 9th, 2024, with vibrant array of activities aimed at promoting health awareness and responsibility among faculty, staff, and students.

The event featured an energetic and enriching Health Fair, held at the University Chapel car park, from 9:00am to 3:00pm daily. Attendees explored various canopies offering healthy drinks like tigernut drinks, biotics, and supplements. Free physiotherapy consultations were available, while massages were offered for a fee. Also, Organisations such as Zuch Drinks, Real Time Pain Relief, Rock Field Unique and others, provided valuable products and services.

A Health Talk was delivered by the Director, Health Services, Dr. Ademola Adebanjo, focused on ‘Sexual Health,’ at the CLR Conference room, covering topics such as sex before marriage, menstruation, pregnancy, ejaculation, and HIV/AIDS, which aimed to empower students with crucial knowledge about maintaining optimal sexual health. Participants gained valuable insights into preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), and maintaining general genital health.

Dr. Adebanjo, also addressed the staff, during the faculty and staff fellowship, focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper posture, diet, and exercise. He encouraged staff members to join the health walk scheduled for the last day of the health week.

Following the informative talk, students gathered in front of the Student Council Office by the University Chapel for a lively game hosted by the Health Team. Utilizing an interactive online platform called KAHOOT, participants armed with their devices, engaged in health-related trivia and challenges, competing for prizes and reinforcing key health messages. The top winners were awarded a variety of prizes including towels, thermostats, supplements, and vitamin pills.

As CU Health Week 2024 continued, the Covenant University community was inspired to prioritize health awareness and responsibility by offering diverse range of activities and resources. The week-long schedule featured a Health Fair, Walk for Health, free medical and nutritional counseling, and informative Health Talks, covering topics such as nutrition, mental wellness, and sexual health. CU Health Week 2024, emphasized the importance for faculty, staff, and students to own and take responsibility for their health and wellness by adopting healthy lifestyles.

In his remarks during the visit of the University Management to the venue of the Health Fair, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo appreciated the array of health products and services and promised to ensure that Health Fairs are hosted more than once per session in Covenant to enable the University community to become more health conscious and intentional about their physical wellbeing.

He reiterated the benefits of regular health checks, exercises, and healthy diet and encouraged participants to do whatever it takes to have themselves checked medically at least once every year.

During one of the sessions, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olujide Adeleke, spoke about self-care and stress management, highlighting the importance of proactive health practices. He discussed various aspects of self-care and stressed the significance of managing stress for overall well-being.

The week concluded with a health walk and exercise session on Saturday, April 13, 2024, led by the Vice-Chancellor and with other members of Management, staff, and students jogging and stretching from the chapel to the school stadium, engaging in friendly games along the way. The event was a resounding success, with participants expressing satisfaction with the week's activities.
