The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Abiodun Adebayo, has commended the outstanding performance of students of the institution who came out tops at the National Blockchain Hackathon Competition Awards.
The Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Hub Sahara, in collaboration with the Federal Government's Cryptography Development Initiative of Nigeria (CDIN), recently hosted the second edition of its campus hackathon, Decahack Initiative, at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro, Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
Speaking during the formal presentation of the award plaques in his office, the Vice-Chancellor, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and hard work. He encouraged the students to remain self-motivated and take advantage of the opportunities presented by Covenant University. He also announced upcoming competitions and opportunities for the students to showcase their talents.
He expressed his appreciation for the Dean of Student Affairs, Mrs. Shola Cooker, the Director of CODEL, Dr. Gbenga Agboola; an Alumnus and doctorate student of the University, who supervised and guided them, Mr. Jerry Ojumah, and all the participating students. He congratulated them on their achievement, emphasizing the university's commitment to innovation and excellence. He encouraged the students to view their success as a stepping stone, reminding them of the importance of continuous improvement and staying humble.
Five start-ups; ICBot, Propspace, Newsgrid (Bonafide), Certify, and RollBucks, from Covenant University, participated in the event. Certify, a credential verification platform hosted on the blockchain emerged as the winner of the Decahack Initiative pitch.
Propspace, a decentralized application built on ICP that facilitates the selling and co-ownership of house units as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), was the first runner-up. ICTBot, a decentralized finance platform providing user-friendly telegram bots for managing wallets and executing transactions, also received recognition.
Each winning team received cash prizes of $5,000, among other perks.
Making a remark at the event, the Dean of Student Affairs, Mrs. Shola Coker, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his support and encouragement. She highlighted the students' exceptional performance at the competition, praising their dedication and hard work. She also recognized Jerry Ojumah, a postgraduate student and part of the Blockchain Team, for his role in preparing the students.
Dr. Mayowa Agboola, the Director of CODEL, expressed gratitude to God and Covenant University for their support. He commended the students for their outstanding performance and advised them to use their success as a platform to impact lives positively.
The event concluded with a formal presentation of the awards and dummy cheques to the Vice-Chancellor, followed by a photo session.
