The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, has emphasized the importance of holistic education and spiritual growth in the grooming of balanced next-generation leaders. Speaking at the opening session of the "Towards a Total Graduate" (TTG) program, organized by the University's African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC), he urged students to pay close attention to the lectures designed to prepare them for life after graduation.
Dr. Oyedepo highlighted the critical role of the TTG program in equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills for impactful living. He noted that many graduates leave school without a clear direction, and the program aims to provide them with the tools to navigate life's challenges. "Learning by discovery is far cheaper than learning by experience," he said, cautioning students against waiting to learn from life's mistakes. "Don't learn how not to have an accident by having one," he added, emphasizing the importance of careful learning and proactive knowledge acquisition.
The Chancellor elaborated on the "Total Man Concept" (TMC), which forms the foundation of the TTG program. He explained that TMC focuses on the development of the whole person—spirit, soul, and body—ensuring that students are well-rounded and prepared for the complexities of life. Dr. Oyedepo emphasized that spiritual capacity development is crucial for maintaining control over one's life and avoiding destructive paths. "When the spirit man is built, it holds the control of your life against things that destroy," he said.
Dr. Oyedepo also touched on the unique nature of Covenant University's education, which he described as unparalleled in fostering not only academic excellence but also character and ethical conduct. He stated that the TTG program fills a gap left by other world-class universities that may neglect character development. He urged students to adhere to the teachings on marriage, work-life balance, and other life skills provided in the program, noting that these teachings are crucial for a fulfilling life.
Reflecting on the achievements of Covenant University graduates, Dr. Oyedepo proudly stated that the University's comprehensive approach has consistently produced highly employable graduates who excel in their professional and personal lives. "Covenant University students are packaged uniquely so they graduate uniquely," he said.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Oyedepo, encouraged students to embrace continuous learning and to be mindful of the choices they make. He reminded them that real-life challenges begin after graduation and that their success will depend on their knowledge, character, and spiritual strength. He blessed the students and officially declared the TTG program open.
