Chancellor Declares the Founding of Covenant University an Act of God

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, has declared the establishment of the great Citadel of Learning an ‘Act of God.’ He made this assertion at the Special Convocation Service, which marked the beginning of the events leading up to the University's Convocation Ceremony, tagged, ‘The 19th Release of Eagles.’

Dr. Oyedepo recounted the University's divine origin, revealing that in 1998, God named the designated land for the establishment of the institution ‘Hebron,’ the place for the making of kings, and also called it ‘His University.’ This encounter laid the groundwork for what has become a significant educational institution in Nigeria, today.

Reflecting on the University's journey, Dr. Oyedepo, shared a critical moment following the receipt of the official license from the Federal Government. While many celebrated, he sought divine confirmation in his hotel room, asking God if the University was truly His. He recalled God's clear response: “It is I.”

On the day Covenant University welcomed its first students, coinciding with the dedication of the campus, he described a profound experience, after cutting the ceremonial tape at the entrance, he received an instruction to surrender the institution to Jesus by laying flat on the floor, in an act of faith. He believes that this allowed Christ to take ownership of the University, a conviction he holds to this day.

“If anyone calls me Founder today, my response will be that Jesus found someone through whom He will communicate His agenda for His University,” he asserted. Dr. Oyedepo emphasized that Covenant University is entirely Christ-centered; founded, built, funded, and operated by Jesus Christ, rather than an individual or church.

He also referenced Landmark University, noting its similar divine beginnings and God's ongoing influence in its development. He firmly stated that upon his passing, neither institution should bear his name, insisting, “The Owner never dies; He lives forever,” referring to Jesus Christ as the eternal foundation of both universities.

This declaration reinforces Covenant University’s commitment to its divine mission and underscores the belief that its successes are a testament to Christ's ongoing guidance and presence.
