Covenant University Celebrates Chemical Engineering Students’ Outstanding Achievement

For the fourth consecutive year, Covenant University students in the Department of Chemical Engineering have claimed the top position in the prestigious 2024 Students’ Design Project.

The Competition was organized by the Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. The 2024 project, titled, ‘Design of 150,000 Tonnes/Year of Activated Carbon, Bitumen, and Synthetic Rubber Production Plant from Waste Tyre Feedstock,’ earned them the coveted award.

The recognition was formally presented during the 54th NSChE International Conference, Exhibition, and Annual General Meeting held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center in Abuja, Nigeria, from November 13 to 16, 2024.

The winning team behind this remarkable success comprised final-year Chemical Engineering students: Imodu Daniella Osimheiroh, Nnaji Uchenna David, Mayaki Daniel Onimisi, Oganah-Ika Nkem, Okafor Precious, and Ehi-Omoike Onosejie. Along with the award, the winning students also received a cash prize of ₦100,000 via bank transfer.

Their exceptional performance was guided by a dedicated group of instructors, including Dr. Ayodeji Ayodele Ayoola (Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering), Professor Augustine Omoniyi Ayeni (former Head of the Department), and other esteemed faculty members such as Dr. Francis Boluwaji Elehinafe, Dr. Anthony Ikechukwu Okoji, and Dr. Temitayo Elizabeth Oladimeji.

Receiving the award, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, commended the Department of Chemical Engineering for its remarkable achievement. He emphasized that the students’ success reflects the quality of education and mentorship provided by the University’s faculty.

Professor Anake, further praised the department’s leadership for sustaining their competitive edge and maintaining Covenant University’s reputation for academic excellence. ‘’The success gained over time speaks volumes about the quality of teaching and the effort put in by the faculty. It is a testament to the level of commitment and leadership in the Department of Chemical Engineering. I congratulate the faculty, students, and the entire department on this significant achievement. I pray that God will continue to release the grace to sustain this position,” Professor Anake posited.

The annual design project competition is a platform for final-year Chemical Engineering students across Nigeria to showcase their innovative solutions to real-world engineering challenges. Covenant University’s repeated victories in this competition underscore the institution’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, and practical problem-solving skills among its students.

As the University Community celebrates this success, the Department of Chemical Engineering remains committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation and excellence in Chemical Engineering education.
