The Guest Speaker at a recent, insightful Town and Gown Seminar of the Department of Sociology, Covenant University, Mrs. Elizabeth Onigbinde, highlighted the crucial role of sociology in both the academic and industrial sectors, while making a presentation on the topic, ‘A Sociologist in the Insurance Industry: Impacting Social Structures.’
Mrs. Onigbinde, a seasoned sociologist and Customer Unit Manager at Custodian Life Assurance Ltd., shared her experiences and expertise on how sociological principles are applied within the insurance sector. She illuminated the intersection between sociology and insurance, explaining the vital role sociologists play in shaping social structures, guiding industry practices, and promoting inclusive policies.
In her presentation, Onigbinde emphasized how sociology helps analyze social structures, behaviors, and interactions that determine access to financial protection. She underscored the essential contributions of sociologists in designing policies that promote equity, foster ethical practices, and enhance community-based risk management.
Additionally, she spoke on evaluating the social determinants of risk and assessing the overall effectiveness of insurance policies.
